The Fondazione Arturo Toscanini, a musical institution of the Emilia-Romagna Region that operates with the support of the Italian Ministry of Arts and Culture, was created in 1994 as an initiative of the region itself together with the Municipality and Province of Parma, and represents the natural evolution of the previous association of the same name founded in 1975 by the municipalities and provinces of Emilia-Romagna. Today it is one of the most important and dynamic musical institutions in Italy and is active in the fields of symphonic and operatic repertory, as well as professional training of young people in the performing arts, recognized by the European Union as a certified training body. The Foundation—which bears the name of Arturo Toscanini, rendering homage to his artistic legacy and the tradition of performance excellence he represents—is located in Parma, the birthplace of this great conductor. Today, following a period of constant growth in the quality and quantity of its artistic capacity, the Foundation now vaunts a logistical and organizational structure that allows it to produce on average over 100 symphonic concerts and more than 50 operas every year. In planning its performance schedule, the Foundation has a range of musical ensembles active throughout the year: the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini which performs major symphonic repertory with appearances by renowned international conductors and soloists; the foundation’s permanent orchestra active both in symphonic concerts throughout the region as well as opera productions; the chorus of the Fondazione Toscanini; and the Accademia Musicale VerdiToscanini, the entity responsible for the Foundation’s educational activity.

The foundation currently manages the concert, opera and ballet seasons of the Teatro Municipale in Piacenza and organizes major concert and opera events at the Auditorium Paganini in Parma, La Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini at the Auditorium Paganini in Parmain Vigoleno (Theatre of the Castle) and Salsomaggiore Terme. Its orchestras have been hosted by major theaters in the region and nationally and they have also undertaken prestigious international tours. Its operatic productions, with designers of the stature of Franco Zeffirelli and Pier Luigi Pizzi and world-class casts, are presented in all major cities in Italy and throughout the world. The Foundation is also active as a co-producer with a number of top theaters in Italy and abroad. Some of the most important public bodies in the Emilia-Romagna region also play a direct role in the organizational life of the Foundation, including being themselves locations where performances are offered. Recently, the Foundation has also opened its doors to private entities, such as corporate and financial institution foundations, following the guidelines of recent Italian legislation governing the activity of musical bodies. The Fondazione Arturo Toscanini operates with the contribution of the Italian Ministry of Arts and Culture which recognizes it as the Orchestral Concert Body of the Emilia-Romagna Region and ARCUS SpA.

The Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini is the point of excellence of the musical activity of the Fondazione Arturo Toscanini that has evolved artistically in the more than three decades of experience gleaned as the Orchestra Regionale dell´Emilia Romagna. Founded in 2002, the goal of this body is to represent the creative spirit and lively musical tradition of the geographical area that is the birthplace of Giuseppe Verdi and Arturo Toscanini, as part of that restricted number of major Italian symphony orchestras capable of aspiring to and performing on a world-class level. In just a few years, also thanks to the farsighted support of the Emilia Romagna region, Arcus (public entity for the support of the arts) and a large group of private supporters, the road embarked upon with commitment and determination has led the Mozart Festival, Emilia-Romagna Symphony Orchestra, Terme Berzieri, Salsomaggiore Terme, ParmaFilarmonica Arturo Toscanini to achieve outstanding results. Enthusiastic response of the public and critics has marked the debut and return performances of the orchestra throughout the world, under the direction of conductors of the caliber of Zubin Mehta, Yuri Temirkanov, Kurt Masur, Charles Dutoit, Mstislav Rostropovich, Georges Prêtre, Eliahu Inbal, Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, Jeffrey Tate, Lawrence Foster, Emmanuel Krivine and, above all, Lorin Maazel, who was its Music Director from 2004 to 2006. In Italy, the concert given on January 16, 2008 will long remain in the memories of all, the date in which the orchestra, making its triumphant debut at La Scala, closed the national celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the death of Arturo Toscanini. Among the numerous soloists with which the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini has had the privilege of performing are Maxim Vengerov, Stanislav Bunin, Misha Maisky, Mariella Devia, Anna Caterina Antonacci, Mike Patton, Lucio Dalla, Uto Ughi, Salvatore Accardo, Marco Rizzi, Steven Isserlis and Boris Petrushansky. A process of on-going innovation in its musical program, together with a rigorous artistic approach, has recently led to a broadening of its repertory that ranges from the classics of the 19th century and musical frontiers of the 20th century, up to current-day avant-garde works. Accompanying this bold initiative has been the invitation extended to a new group of conductors, all part of the young generation, already acclaimed on an international level. From 2006 to the present, stepping up onto the podium of the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini to enthusiastic response have been Vladimir Jurowski, Kazushi Ono, Carlo Rizzi, Tugan Sokhiev, Juraj Valchua, Tomas Netopil, Yoel Levi, Michele Mariotti, Dimitri Jurowski and Lawrence Renes.
