Festival Verdi 2017

Parma and Busseto, September 28 - October 22

Jérusalem, La traviata, Stiffelio, Falstaff, Messa da Requiem are this year main shows as part of the Verdi Festival 2017 edition (from September 28th through October 22nd) dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Arturo Toscanini birth.

4 new productions 4 commissions on debut, 22 events spread with more than 100 scheduled sessions in 25 days.

We are also proud to announce that the Festival has received two nominations by the International Opera Awards for best Festival and best new production with the Jean d’Arc by Saska Boddeke and Peter Greenaway.  On May 7, 2017 the winner be selected.

The international promotion of the Verdi Festival has been organized by the Emilia- Romagna tourist board in collaboration with the Cultural Department of Emilia-Romagna Region, the Teatro Regio and tour operator partner Parma Incoming and will include a roadshow which will touch on all major European trade fairs and Italian Cultural Institutes abroad.

This includes the Italian Cultural Institute in New York on February 14th, where Governor of Emilia Romagna Region - Stefano Bonaccini  will greet the guests and introduce the Parma’s 2017 Verdi Festival presentation.

Cultural holiday packages have been created to attract opera and music lovers to the Verdi Festival and to the region. Opening night and Festival Verdi kick off 2017, will be Jérusalem, on the 28th of September at the Teatro Regio di Parma,(encore October 8, 12, 20.)

Hugo De Ana, director, with the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini and the Choir of the Teatro Regio di Parma prepared by Martino Faggiani; Daniele Callegari conducts this critical edition by Jürgen Selk.

Cast: Ramón Vargas (Gaston), Vito Priante (Le comte de Toulouse), Michele Pertusi and Mirco Palazzi (Roger), Annick Massis and Silvia Dalla Benetta (Hélène), Sara Rossini (Isaure), Rubén Amoretti (Adhémar de Monteil), Paolo Antognetti (Raymond), Italo Proferisce (L’émir de Ramla), Qing Xiu (Un officier de l’émir), Francesco Salvatori (Un hérauld).

At the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi Busseto, September 29th, La traviata (encoreOctober 3, 4, 9, 11, 14, 16, 18), in coproduction with the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the Fondazione Orchestra Haydn di Bolzano and Trento and the Landestheater Coburg. The new staging designed by the winning team of the European Opera-directing Prize, is composed by Andrea Bernard (director and set designer), Elena Beccaro (costumes), Alberto Beltrame (set assistant). Maestro Sebastiano Rolli conducts the criticaledition by Fabrizio Della Seta.

Graham Vick, for the first time in Parma, directs this new Stiffelio, which debut is September 30th, (encore October 6, 13, 21), at the Teatro Farnese, to continue last year project Maestri al Farnese.

The 1600s wooden theater has been chosen as the place for new experimental productions with worldwide known directors. In this new set the audience will watch whilst standing and freely move within the stage space, choosing its spot to better enjoy the acoustics. Mauro Tinti signs the sets and costumes; Giuseppe Di Iorio lights; Ron Howell is the choreographer. Maestro Garcia Calvowill lead the Bologna Orchestra and Choir. Cast: Luciano Ganci (Stiffelio), Maria Katzarava (Lina), Francesco Landolfi (Stankar), Giovanni Sala (Raffaele), Emanuele Cordaro (Jorg), Blagoj Nakoski (Federico di Frengel), Sofia Koberidze (Dorotea). Critical edition  Kathleen KuzmickHansell. The opera is a co-production with Teatro Comunale di Bologna.

Falstaff, the last of Verdi’s masterpieces at the Teatro Regio, debut October 1, (encore October 5, 15, 22). The new production by Jacopo Spirei; scenes by Nikolaus Webern and costumes by Silvia Aymonino. Riccardo Frizza directs the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini and Roberto de Candia the Choir of the Teatro Regio di Parma. Cast: Misha Kiria (Falstaff only October 15); Giorgio Caoduro (Ford), Juan Francisco Gatell (Fenton), Gregory Bonfatti (Dott. Cajus), Andrea Giovannini (Bardolfo), Federico Benetti (Pistola), Amarilli Nizza (AliceFord), Laura Giordano (Nannetta), Sonia Prina (Mrs. Quickly), Jurgita Adamonyte (Mrs. MegPage).

Verdi’s sacred masterpiece, Messa da Requiem, performed October 7 and 19 at the Teatro Regio by the Philarmonic Arturo Toscanini and the Choir of the Teatro Regio; conductor Daniele Callegari; soloists Anna Pirozzi, Veronica Simeoni, Antonio Poli and Riccardo Zanellato.

A Verdi Gala to celebrate the Grand Maestro’s 204th birthday on October 10th, will see the performance of famous arias and pieces from his operas with soloists and orchestra at the Teatro Regio.
